A Potentilla of some kind perhaps. Are those leaves trefoil as they appear? Can you give us a picture from a bit further back to show habit?

Potentilla sp. still fits the new angle. The red thing could be a plum sucker. Any purple leaved plums around there?

i have had purple leaf plums in MI for ... well... forever.. i never saw a seedling ...

but i have seen crabapple seedlings that are red ...

is that possible from a botanical view??

ps: in fact. the only purple leaf plum.. that ever plummed for me... did the year before it up and died ... i never stopped to wonder why?... MI winters??? .. it flowered reliably.. but never set fruit???? i always assumed it was a last ditch effort at propagating the species... and that was 20 odds years ago .... man.. the flashbacks are going to start again ... lol ...

Yes, it could well be a crab apple seedling.

But note, Ken, I didn't say plum 'seedling', I said plum 'sucker'.

Thanks everyone. I'll be uprooting the Rough Cinquefoil. There are a dozen or so plants. They're big and horsey and I see from googling that they get little yellow flowers.

I'll leave the plum for a while to see what it grows into.
