And again...

You guys have been awesome in the past with the accuracy of your identifications, so I bring before you two more.

This came up amongst a lone planting of Liriope. Poor thing (the liriope), I really should get more of it and find a real place for it... but I digress... it is the odd leafy plant that I am interested in learning the identity of. I have asked a few people around here and I just keep getting the same answer, "It's a weed." But I wouldn't mind finding out just what this "weed" is and deciding if I want a place for it in my yard or not.

This next one is more a 2 year curiosity. It is not in my yard but my lazy neighbor's (note the mold and algae on the house?). At the end of their house they have a whole line of these things. They are easily 12 ft tall, single stalked and die off each winter only to come back in the spring. I would love to find out what they are simply so I no longer have to wonder.

Okay folks, the green flag is being waved. Time to see who wins!

Well the first one looks like a Chinaberry seedling.

RE: And again...

Could very well be... after looking up images of Chinaberry Trees, I think there might be 4 or 5 full grown trees in my neighborhood. Thank you.

RE: And again...

Okay, since you are in Florida, the second picture is most likely Clerodendrum indicum (syn. Siphonanthus indicus) aka Turk's Turban, a very prolific, invasive introduced species from southeast Asia. It moves by birds and also by underground rhizomes. The long, tubular white, fragrant flowers are pollinated by moths and butterflies. Arresting turquoise seeds surrounded by red sepals follow, but beware--each is fertile!

Here is a link that might be useful: Turk's Turban

RE: And again...

At first I was about to dismiss that suggestion off-hand. I did a search for Turk's Turban and looked at images and the first dozen or so looked nothing like this. But then there was one picture of Clerodendrum sahelangii, which was also called Turk's Turban. This one looked closer to what they have. However, I do not recall ever seeing flowers on these things. But then, I don't spend much time at all looking in the direction of their house. I'm not here to bash on my unsuspecting neighbors... but... *shudder*. I'll have to try and pay a little closer attention to the plants themselves and see if they put out flowers before dying off this year. That said, your invasive comment makes sense. These things are starting to pop up everywhere.
