What kind of tree is this?

It is a tree in the front yard of our new home. It has these small orange pod/fruit like things on it. Our home is located in a Suburb of Southern CA. There are no flowers on the tree. The fruits (if thats what they are) are hard and do not smell. Maybe they arent ripe. They are not perfectly round, they look like mini pumpkins. There is one in the front yard as well os outside the fence by the curb. I cannot figure out what this could be. I have a dog so I want to be sure that these are not any kind of danger to him. I do have pictures of the fruit/pod up close but I can only post one picture, they are about the size of a Walnut.
