Here's a close-up of the flowers.

And here is plant #2 I need help identifying. The leaves look a lot like those of cimicifuga.

First one looks like a penstemon.

First one is penstemon digitalis. There are a number of red cultivars out there, including Husker Red, which is what I'd guess this is.

That second one might be Angelica.

Foliage of nr 2 looks more like Filipendula ulmaria. And the flowers aren't real umbels, are they?

Second is a Filipendula and certainly looks like F ulmaria.

Thanks to all. I checked your suggestions online and looked at the plants again to check for the field characteristics and they do indeed seem to be
Penstemon digitalis Husker Red, and
Filipendula ulmaria

Now I'll have a much better idea what to do with them.
