| Hey guys,
I moved into my current Toronto house last fall and was delighted to see the garden come to life again with hundreds of little surpprises come spring. I've identified most of the plants I've found so far, but a few are eluding me. Any help would be much appreciated! Obviously this first one is a fern, but what kind? Please say ostrich fern- I love fiddleheads! They're in most to full shade and range from 2 to 4 ft tall. Then there's a climber over an arbor whose leaves were evergreen through the last (admittedly unusually warm) winter, and that has very unusual bark that's peeling off everywhere. [IMG]http://i1263.photobucket.com/albums/ii636/fawnmtl/climber1.jpg[/I MG] There are also several clumps of very pretty purple flowers on foot-tall or somewhat higher stalks with thin, pointy leaves. I'm not sure if they're a weed or not, but I like them! This one was taken earlier in the season, the leaves are now much larger obviously, and with less of a red tinge. If I owned rather than rented, I'd tear the thing out, excavate down 10 feet and start with fresh soil to be safe- jeez, is it ever invasive! New shoots of it come out from the ground all over. [IMG]http://i1263.photobucket.com/albums/ii636/fawnmtl/P1000687.jpg[/I MG] Finally, the funniest story by far- this huge rambler (easily 12 feet tall and 16 wide) I've been nursing with vermicompost, coffee grounds and epsom salts all spring convinced it was a rose, only to have quite a surprise later :P I can tell you with confidence that its berries are NOT poisonous- else I'd have been quite sick after all the "rosehip tea" I drank over the winter! It really looks a lot like an old climber rose but in retrospect (now that another bush I hadn't even realized was there turned out to be a rosebush, I have some basis for comparison) its leaves are less round and it has many fewer thorns. [IMG]http://i1263.photobucket.com/albums/ii636/fawnmtl/climber2.jpg[/I MG] Thanks in advance for your help guys, and sorry for the image quality- I can't find my camera for the life of me, so I had to make do with my phone! |

| Oh boy, that didn't work, did it? And here I was all proud of myself for being tech-savvy. Here's a link to the photobucket album... sorry, I tried to embed :( |

| Yes, that looks like an Ostrich fern. Purple flowers looks like Spiderwort, Tradescantia. The think with the purple tinged leaves looks like Tree of Heaven, a horrible invasive in some areas. The last one looks like multiflora rose and you are probably seeing rose hips, not berries. Also an invasive. To post pictures directly, use the HTML Code link instead. Also, feel free to upload full size pictures.

| 1. I think it is rhubarb plus solomon's seal. 2. spiderwort 3. Looks like sumac. If so, probably Rhus typhina. 4. 5. I'd say it is probably a multiflora rose 6. FataMorgana |

| Just to be clear - my numbering is in reference to the photo album not the links listed above. FataMorgana |

| Yes, I guess this could be sumac. An updated picture of mature leaves would help:

| I couldn't get photo # 6 any larger, but from what I could see, it looks like climbing hydrangea, except that would not have berries or thorns. |
