This is taken in a wooded lot in N. VA. I am in a rich cove forest that is overrun w/trees of heaven and this (see picture). Now, w/the trees of heaven I can see where the humongous parent trees were that gave rise to so many sprouts BUT w/the unknown in the pic I don't see any trees or large bushes that resemble these sprouts. Thank-you for any ideas!

Looks like Ash (Fraxinus)seedlings.
|
Do ash trees send up seedlings all over the place like trees of heaven? These things are coming up in grass, in deep shade, in full sun...I mean everywhere! They don't seem to have the stem of trees...they are more bush/shrub like.
|
Yes the seedling can be sort of weedy. A closeup of the stem may settle the question.

Ash seedlings do pop up all around. But unlike the tree-of-heaven, they are native to your location. In my location, I find that ash are often one of the first real trees along with poplars to colonize an area. They appear alongside woody shrubs like dogwood. FataMorgana

Thanks for your input Fatamorgana. Still not sure about ash so I put up another pic w/subject line ash seedlings...the thing is I don't see any other ashes around. W/poplars it's obvious where they came from as we have 100+ ft parent trees all over, and it's plain to see that the previous owners cut a bunch of heavens down and there is still an 100 ft specimen that I will not touch w/a bargepole! But I don't see any big ashes! Also the leaves of these things are not toothed...aren't ash leaves serrated?

Depend on which Ash you're talking about.
Here is a link that might be useful: White Ash (Fraxinus americana)

Yup, that looks like it Salt! Wow, amazing how a disturbed area that was once a perfectly balanced woodland can be quickly overrun by a few dominant species! Poplar, ash and heaven! Good grief!
