ID this tree from leaves

Bought several large Nandina bushes from a "going out of business" nursery. When they started growing, noticed 3 of them had trees coming up through the bushes - all the same type. They had been skillfully cut back so I could not tell when I bought them. Anyhow...They are sending out shoots from the trunks (about 2-3 inch diameter) that look like the video. They favor birch but are to elongated and do not have leaf stems - leaves grow directly from the branch. Any ideas?

Ulmus sp. I think. I don't know US elms so can't say which one.

If you can tell all the European elms just from suckers you have an amazing unique ability.

Not only are the species elms and the older cultivated forms difficult there are multiple new hybrids on the market.

But it's possible the one being asked about is just another Siberian elm, I'm not sure.

Thank you both! On looking at pictures of the elms, I believe they are winged elms. I think I will rescue them in the fall and plant in an open area.

bboy - I did not intend to imply I could id European elms either, just that I don't know US ones.

Yes, that's a winged elm. Definitely. You should see more of those wings as it matures.
