They die to the ground (the roots survive) every year regardless of whether they're "cut to the ground each year."

Terribly invasive - my sister bought this variegated one not knowing - a "reputable" nursery told her it was non-invasive - a couple of years later there were new shoots 20 feet away from the mother plant.

it has never been very aggressive in my z5 MI garden ... in full shade ....

i am sure our winters keep it in check .. ON SOME LEVEL .. as compared to the warmer zone peeps ...

The vine under it could be kudzu or poison ivy, very small in this pic. You may want to take a closer pic and ask about that also.

It is invasive here. Slow to start the spread, but it does. We were zone 5, now bumped up to 6.
