Ready to figure out what's in my backyard

Long time reader, first time poster. Our house came with a nice, big backyard, but everything's looking pretty overgrown. I'm completely new to plants and gardening, and I'd like to know what I'm dealing with so that I can get things in shape and enjoy!

I'll start with two types of shrubs that are growing along the back of the house. These pictures were taken in mid-April.

I believe the first is some type of spirea - it has tiny purple-pink flower clusters:

There are four of these planted in a row. The "twigs"(?) have shot up about three feet since I took this picture. These poor things are a mess:

Could you give us a more recent picture, preferably of the whole bush? The second one may be a lilac, but I'm not sure.

The first one is indeed a golden spirea, either a S. bumalda or S. japonica variety.

Second appears to be Privet, Ligustrum sp.
