I grew red malabar last year. It has shiny, rounder, and less veined leaves plus it is a vining plant. Not a match with that. Jew's mallow or molokhia (Molokhia) which I'm trying out this year, is supposed to be mucilaginous too but that doesn't seem a match either. If you know it's a veggie, do you know in which cuisine? That can help to narrow it down if someone else doesn't have the answer for you soon - this group is good! FataMorgana

thanks, seedmoney, but it's not malabar spinach. fatamorgana, it's a veggie used in hmong/southeast asian cooking, so perhaps that might help narrow it down (of course, malabar spinach is also used in hmong/southeast asian cusine ;-)

It came to me in the night!! A dear friend of mine from Uruguay gave me a pot of this--it's called Okinawa Spinach, aka Gynura bicolor. It's a nutritious vegetable, highly prized in Japan. It's related to the common houseplant known as Purple Passion Vine. It's in the Asteraceae, and the yellowish-orange flowers are relished by butterflies.

fatamorgana, i thought it was new zealand spinach, too, but the underside of the leaves being purple makes it okinawa spinach. thanks seedmoney! that's cool that it just popped into your head at night. it's certainly an interesting plant.
