Looks like an azalea.

Yep, Azalea.... They like shade, though, so I doubt that's the cause of it not blooming. Try giving it some Azalea/Rhododendron specific fert. early in the spring. Should liven it right up... And clean up some of that dead plant material around it too. It otherwise looks healthy enough -- just needs some TLC.

buds are set in fall.. for spring bloom ....

if the prior owner.. pruned in fall.. then they probably cut off all the buds ... you dont mention how many years you have been there ..

i dont understand the pic... this is not the normal shape of the A's i am familiar with ... hence the improper pruning idea ..

We've been here a year and a half. I've never pruned it... Any suggestions for getting it back to a decent shape? I do have holly-tone, so I can sprinkle that near it...
