Looks like Peony.

Could a squirrel or chipmunk have planted it? I deadhead my peonies...

A piece might have been left behind when someone moved the original plant. Happens to me all the time when I move my Peonies.

There has never been a peony within 15 yards of that spot.

The foliage doesnt look like peonies to me though it very well could be.
It does however remind me of sassafras tree seedlings of which the trees are often found in the wild. I live in the midwest and they are very prevalent here. They do have 3 different shaped leaves... one whole one, one with 2 lobes and one with 3 lobes. Maybe some blew into your gardens from nearby woods? See if the photo in the link looks good to you. I'm not good at doing these link things so if the link doesn't work then just copy and paste www.learnnc.org into your browser.

Looks similar to Bleeding Heart (Dicentra spectabilis) foliage, but I am not sure of it.

I agree with Gillespie...it could be a Sassafras seedling. Compare to the images at the link below.

Looks like Tree Peony foliage to me. I really don't think it's sassafrass, Sassafras leaves have more 'roundish' divisions than that, and from what I can see those look like compound leaves (although it's hard to tell in that photo.) Sassafras has simple leaves.

No reason it couldn't have started from seed, things do turn up in odd places.

Pretty sure it's not sassafras. Peony does seem more likely. I'm amazed to see a seedling of one--very cool!

I still think it's a tree peony.
Look here.

RE: garden volunteer

You may be right. I have regular peonies and at least one neighbor does, but I have not seen tree peonies anywhere in the 'hood. But, time will tell...and how fun to have whatever it turns out to be to volunteer in my garden!

Hot plant

I have 3 types of tree peonies. All of my babies are completely red. All of my new growth is completely red. The one in the picture above was transplanted in the middle of the june last year so it was considerably shocked.

Yours may be a different type if it is a tree peony though. idk Keep us posted

Sassafras

This is a Sassafras

Peaony tree leave

That is a 1 year old tree peony seedling which has turned green. New growth only seems to be red.
