Red Berry 3 Leaves

1 berry per plant, low to the ground, 3 leaves.
I saw this plant today. I am just wondering what it is, if it is poisonous or okay to eat. I say it in my mother's back yard and I have small children. Just want to see if I should be wary of the plant. The three leaves made me nervous. Thanks.

Looks like Mock Strawberry (Duchesnea indica). Not poisonous but not really edible either.

Please be aware that there are gradations between "poisonous" and "okay to eat". As a general rule, one should teach small children to never taste, or even handle wild plants unless they've been picked and put in a salad by someone who clearly knows the identity of the plant.

Even some of the most familiar plants used in our gardens and landscapes have toxic parts. You might be surprised (and horrified).

Just sayin'. ;-)
