This is growing well in a very very hot rocky area. Steep slopes on the side of a small dam. Can anyone tell me what this plant is?

Wow, guess that wasn't so tuff after all. I have never seen garlic growing before! (sad, I know) How can I know when the right time to pick the cloves is?
|
It's Allium sativum var.ophioscorodon, Rocombole or hardneck garlic. You should be able to gather bulbils that form on the main stem after the blooms fade in August. It's a good tasting garlic but the cloves form seperate from the stem and tend to fall apart easily so you can't braid them like traditional garlic. They'll last almost forever in a baby food jar at room temperature. I just let the bulbs grow and harvest the bulbils, they taste the same. HTH

The green flower spikes can also be harvested. Look up garlic scape for more info. FataMorgana
