Name That Plant!

What plant is this?

Found quite a few of these in the back yard. Haven't been at home for 2 weeks and some of them are 2 feet tall. Serrated leaves and quite some spikes on the stem. I already pulled them out. Some of them come from the same root, like the one on the top. Some of the roots grew quite deep. Can any one tell me what is this? Thanks.

Looks like a thistle (Cirsium).

You need to be vigilant in pulling up (maybe treating?) ALL sprouts you see. They can soon take over an entire garden. They can emerge many feet away from 'mother' plant owing to their extensive root systems.

I looked up thistle (Cirsium) and it gives me chills. Looks like I have to prepare for a war. Thanks for the help.
