I think this is a volunteer plant as I don't recall planting this myself. Any ideas?

It's a weed, Oxalis.

Oxalis stricta

You'd better get rid of it or you'll have more coming up SOON. Those little seed pods are ready to explode (test that by gently pinching the larger pods) and scatter seeds everywhere.

These plants have a delightfully sour taste...a favorite edible for children. Heck, I still like to nibble on them!

thanks everybody. it's not a 'weed' to me...I think it's so pretty!! ;-)

Though....I don't want it smothering my other nearby plants. What if I still want SOME of this in my windowbox for next year? Should I just cut back most of the other seed pods now so they don't spread further ?

It does self seed, but it is easy to pull out whatever you don't want.

IME, you can' have a little of it. The explosive seed pods throw the seeds all over the place. Once that happens, you'll be pulling up sprouts by the handfull. When I lived in OH, they were easy to pull out but they tend to break at the soil line here in AL.

If all you have is window boxes, I don't think you'll have a problem, certainly not with smothering, these are small plants. Most of the seeds will probably be flung far away.
