Tiny flowers in leaf axils

These plants were about 2 feet tall, and highly branched. They were growing in a sunny ditch that stays wet from sprinkler run-off. They had single flowers in leaf axils that were about 1/4 inch long. All leaves were lanceolate, and 4 to 6 times as long as wide. Lower leaves were up to 4 inches long, but most leaves were much smaller - about 1/2 to 1 inch long. The second photo shows a fruiting flower, an open flower, and a bud. The third photo shows a close shot of the open flower, which does not have petals.
