I noticed the tiny white flowers on this plant which decided to grow in gravel "driveway" part of yard. It's very stiff, wiry, feels like a softish juniper. It's apparent that it's been driven over, at least several times. I don't even have a genus guess to begin trying to find this little guy.

Diodia?

How many petals do those teensy flowers have? It reminds me of Knawel, but can't really tell for sure.

Thanks for the suggestions, Carol & Rhizo. 'Twas an oversight not to mention there are 4 petals (which can only be seen 2-3" from my naked eyes - neither side of the bifocals are enough for something this small!) Sorry, and wish I knew more plant anatomy words to describe this little fella better. Should I ask 'honey' to take a pic with a real camera? My phone's not very good at close-ups.
|
It looks more like Polypremum procumbens to me, because of those four rounded petals. That species can be several inches tall, and scraggly, but is usually fairly compact.

jekeesl, thanks for the input. I think you've nailed this one. So glad it's a native, what a cutie! Hope it doesn't mind being pulled out of the drive & potted. Time will tell... I LOVE tiny flowers! It was also fun to "hear about" Diodia and Knawel. I looked at both and hope to see each sometime!
|
Glad to see the id - this pops up at my house in the beds but is usually less woody looking and scraggly as jekeesl says.

This may have been there for a while, just getting driven on and possibly mowed if it stuck up too far. We've actually had some rain lately, probably what enabled the blooming. I'm curious to see what it looks like without the "takes a licking" test treatment. I think "timex" would be a good common for this one.
