Plants to name?

Hi all, I moved into this house this winter and this is the first time I'm seeing the plants the last homeowner planted. Some I liked and others I tore out. Here's what's left and I have no idea what they are!

I love these. What are they? And is there any way I can encourage them to stand up a little straighter? Some flop over on the ground and I worry my husband will run them over with the mower!

There are a few of these around and I'm not sure what they are. Over the winter, I was tearing up the dead things and the stems of these were dead. But when I tried to pull them up, the entire plant wanted to come with. So I left them in. This spring, the stems came back to life! However, the leaves at the end have stayed dead. How are these cared for over the winter? Do you cut them down? Leave them?

First one is a white Platycodon. Second is Phlox. Both are perennials. You can cut them down in the autumn or spring or not at all. Your choice.

Thanks! Do they grow better one way or the other? I like how tall the Plox gets, but I don't want to cut it and have it not grow as tall... Will one get bushier?

Also, do they need to be divided every so often?

Could the first one be Campanula persicifolia? Foliage doesn't look quite right for Platycodon.

Here is a link that might be useful: Campanula persicifolia

Once you've decided on an ID, the Perennials forum would be the best place to ask more specific questions.

The leaves and buds don't match Campanula persicifolia.

I think the Balloon flower (platycodon) is right since I often marveled at how cool it was that the buds of the new blooms were hollow or poofy.

Thanks for your help! I didn't know about the pictures until now. So I'll be sure to do that from now on.

Yes, balloon flower. Balloon flower has a milky sap.

Definitely a balloon flower. And the distinctive unopened flower buds, visible in the picture, give it its name.
