 o
friend or foe?

These plants, now about 2' tall, appeared all over my flower garden this spring. I thinned out a bunch of them but left a few because their foliage was pretty. For a while, only these slightly serrated leaves. Now these spiky clusters are appearing on the top, which I hope will become beautiful flowers but fear they might be something heinous. If so, I want to pull them put before they seed.

It looks like Lobelia to me.

I looked the flower up, lobelia siphilitica, and other than it likes swampy conditions, it meets ALL the characteristics. It is the type of plant I would buy, but I just have no memory of doing so. My fingers are crossed that you are right, because it's really a beautiful plant. Thanks, Carol.

It does looks much like my L. siphilitica which has just begun to bloom in the last week. (I'm also in NY State.) I've seen these growing in the wild in a variety of conditions everything from "swampy" full sun to dry shade.

It is possible it may have hitched a ride in the pot of another flower you planted.
