| I come bearing bad pics!
1. Any idea what this might be, and if it has any redeeming qualities at all? Whatever it is, starts off growing in the "alley" between two fences before working its way through ours, so it's already got two strikes against it. I've never seen it flower but take that with a grain of salt - up until last month, I hadn't seen the trumpet vine/whatever-berry combo consuming the top of my neighbor's fence in the top right corner there... :o 2. What about the plant to the left of it? I think this is a vine, but I'm not sure. It has small white flowers, which are not-exactly visible towards the bottom. It's like, 6 ft tall? |

| First & 2nd one - weedy honeysuckle shrub. No redeeming qualities except that the birds eat the seeds... that then fall in your yard - and all over the area - and sprout, and sprout, and sprout. |
| 4 looks more like Lythrum salicaria aka Loostrife than Epilobium angustifolium aka Fireweed/Willowherb. |
| Agree with flora, #4 is Purple loosestrife. |
| purpleinopp: THANK YOU. I was thinking honeysuckle because of the leaves and berries but "weedy" never came to mind. I was searching for invasives, and "woody" or "shrubby". Would I be hasty in pulling ALL of the honeysuckle that I come across? (I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that I have a garden & that technically, I can do whatever I want with it) Thank you, PSUhorty & flora_uk. Now I can stop dwelling on how I missed two roses, and drive myself insane wondering how I could know that the Phlox I can barely see is Phlox, but not be aware that the fully visible Phlox... is Phlox. After looking at #4, I think flora_uk is correct (loosestrife has a squarish stem?). That's on the interim list of invasives in my state, so I should yank it, right, even if it does seem well-behaved? I'm hoping the answer to that is no because the prospect seems ripe with nearly everything about gardening that freaks me out :\ |
| I would pull the honeysuckle and the purple loosestrife - since both have flowers and/or berries, I'd bag them up rather than adding them to the compost & put them out with the trash, and I'd do it soon, before the seeds spread on either one of them. |
| I'm not sure trash is an option. Our dump won't take yard waste any more, but I'm not sure if that applies to yard waste in garbage bags or not. If need be, can I burn them to destroy the seeds? Should I be able to pull *that* honeysuckle? I'm not sure what the root system would be like, but there's maybe 2ft of space between the neighbors fence and ours. I'm worried that if I try to pull it, I risk damaging their fence or yard. And I'll have to fight my way through the whatever- berries that my husband (bless his heart) will not let me get rid of yet. I was stuck on thorns for five minutes the other day, and the thorns were only at my front then. My plan was to attack as much as possible with a saw and loppers, and get RoundUp in somehow, but if it's something I should be able to pull, I'd prefer to go that route. The honeysuckle that I have pulled/will pull has had shallow & compact root systems, but it's all been much smaller than that, and AFAIK, not producing anything but leaves. The largest one so far was maybe a foot and a half high, and that's like, at least 6 where it grows up instead of out. |

| #2 is on the tip of my tongue, but I can't get it right now... |
| The other plant in the second photo looks like Cornus racemosa. |
| Looks like you're right, lycopus. Thank you! |
