Not name, so much as explain (iris seed pod)

If there's a better forum to post this, please point me to it...

Wondering what has caused this unusually large seed pod on a bearded iris? It's as long as my finger and quite thick.

TIA!

I'm not sure I'd consider that an exceptionally large seed pod.....looks close to average sized to me. Unless hybridizing, bearded iris flower stalks are usually removed once the flowers fade, so the rather generously sized seed pods are not allowed to develop. It is sometimes thought that allowing a flowering perennial, depending on species, to go to seed or produce excess seeds can weaken the plant, which is one of the many reasons for deadheading :-)

Google 'bearded iris seed pods' and you should find a number of examples that look similar. FWIW, Iris foetidissima produces even larger seed pods from an overall smaller plant.

I agree it is not unusually large, but in the case of these Iris, the plant that produced the flower dies afterwards. If you wrap a string around the stem, you will find that the part of the tuber/corm (whatever it is) that produces flowers will not be around next year.

It's a rhizome and they are annually moving out and leaving the old parts near the center to deteriorate anyway. When you lift and divide bearded iris you discard these declining sections in the middle, replant the young growth around the edge.
