Virginia creeper.

Looks very much like Virginia Creeper. If it is, you may notice that older growth has a way of clinging to surfaces. Don't know if it's a tendril, a root, or something else. It grows out from the stem, very thin, and terminates in little flattened "pads" that grip wood or concrete block. (I've seen it there. Probably grips other surfaces too.)

i don't see the roots/tendrils/suckers yet, but my plant is still quite young. i have 3 of them - wonder where they came from - i'm an urban rooftop container gardener. guess they came with the birds... guess i can look forward to some nice fall color!

Bird pooh is the cause of spread of Virginia Creeper!

It could be Parthenocissus inserta, thicket creeper, which is less likely to climb. Easiest to tell the two species apart when they are in flower or fruit.

VC will suck the life out of a pot.. just as fast as it grows ...

It's actually an important bird food (berries in fall/winter) for berry eating birds...but I agree with Ken, that as a gardener, it has no value other than that to the wildlife.

Virginia creeper is sometimes used as an ornamental similar to Boston ivy for covering walls, trellises, and bare ground. I often see it used to cover brick on buildings for its dark green foliage and bright red fall color.

I've seen it used on freeway walls here that have been textured to accommodate it. Looks pretty good there. Better than concrete.
