| Hi,
I'm out of town (my home is in Northern VA...appalachian trail-type wood) and my husband had to cut down a fallen tree...he sent me a picture. Is it a pin cherry? Thanks for any input! |

| No, it isn't. Someone else here will tell you what it is in short order. FataMorgana |

| Hi and thank-you for the input but as you can see by looking at the second pic this is not a sassafrass. Leaves are definitely not sassafrass...any other suggestions? |
|
| Looks like a Sassafras to me, they don't always have lobed leaves. |
|
| Ask your husband to crush a leaf and see what he thinks! If it smells like root beer, he will convince you. |

| Unlobed sassafrass? Wow! I never thought about that. I mean I could imagine finding a few unlobed leaves on a tree but what would cause a sassafrass to be completely unlobed? Is this common? Thanks for the help saltcedar...I certainly learn something new every day! Carol, thanks for your input...I will ask my husband to crush a couple of leaves...I was hoping this wouldn't be a sassafrass...so many butterflies/moths around here depend on them yet they seem to be the most vulnerable to storms etc. |

| Unless you have the stump ground out, there will probably be new plants popping up. It's noted for having root colonies. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Sassafras

| This site mentions that mature trees have tend to have unlobed leaves. |

| Got it! It is a sass...my husband said it smelled beautiful when he cut it..*sigh* I'm looking forward to seeing some sprouts from the stump. Thanks Salt and Carol! |
