What is this Plant?

Posted by allisonmary florida (My Page) on

I bought this plant at a yard sale and the woman said it was a coffee plant. I've looked at pics of coffee plants and I can't find any that look like this plant. I have it in a pot in full sun. It's growing fine, but I wanted to know what it was for sure before I plant it in my yard. Any help would be great. Thanks!!

Ricinus? Castor Bean. If so, be careful with it.

RE: What is this Plant?

It's Jatropha gossypifolia, aka the Bellyache Bush. All parts poisonous, particularly the seeds. The seller got it confused with J. curcas, which is sometimes called the Coffee Bean Jatropha. A few years back its seeds (which resemble coffee beans) were supposed to be the next great bio-fuel but its potential was never reached. Be advised; all parts of Jatrophas are poisonous.

That's it seedmoney, thank you! Thanks also Gary. I don't think I'll be planting this. :(
