Leaves look a little big for violets to me, but maybe there are bigger ones in CA. Brunnera?

I don't think they are violets...they have heart shaped leaves, as hosta leaves are described; hence, my thinking that they are hostas. I looked up brunnera, and they could be that plant.

Many violets have heart-shaped leaves. For instance, here are leaves of Viola sororia, the common blue violet:

But violets and brunnera have different-shaped flowers.

Actually, the heart shaped leaves look like what is a very invasive vine. It is called "air potato" or
DIOSCORIA BULBIFERA. If you catch it before it makes the above ground things which look like a potato, you have a chance. Otherwise, it will spread like kudzu.

My vote is for wild violet. I zoomed in on the photo to get a better look. I have a ton of these growing in my yard. They have purple flowers in the spring. I think their foliage is very pretty even though they are considered an invasive weed. They are also native to the state I live in.

They look like Brunnera. Do the leaves feel like sandpaper? Were the flowers tiny blue similar to Forget me not? If so, it's Brunnera.

A native can't be an invasive weed. It can be exuberant, aggressive, weedY, seemingly impossible to get rid of, but natives are not invasive, a technical term appropriate for exotic (non-native) plants only.
