Abundance of white

I shot these in mid-June... Curious as to what the plant is because I'd never seen it before. The plants were no more than 4ft tall (some smaller, some larger) and grown in various amts. of sun/shade. The leaves are paired on long/tall rigid stems. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction for ID.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you Carol!

Valerian often sports a hint of pink to its blooms. If you look closely at the picture above, it is there although these are more white than I usually see them. They are a short-lived perennial and also a wind-blown self-seeder which may appear where they will. Looks for these blooms nearby but elsewhere next spring/summer.

One other interesting feature of this plant is the funky smelling root.

Definitely. The root is rather octopus-shaped with numerous splayed fingers and the smell has been likened by many to dirty gym socks.
