My friend wants to know what this tree is called. I'm not even sure it is a tree. Any ideas?

Weeping white mulberry, I think.

Here is a link that might be useful: Morus alba 'Chaparral'

agree with the weeping mulberry - and yes, it is a tree, though it suckers, so an untended one can look like shrubbery.

I'm not sure if it is a fruiting variety or not (there are some mulberry trees that don't fruit). But next June look for fruit. It is edible. Some varieties have wonderful tasting fruit - the fruit tastes, well, like a mulberry. But to compare to something you know, most similar to a raspberry.

Some varieties don't taste as fine. I have 2 mulberry trees planted by the previous owners. One is excellent tasting. The other, not so much. I say the fruit from the second tree tastes like sweetened cardboard. :^P

This is a fun one for kids if you have a tasty tree. My own love it and help themselves to the fruit.
