| Well, I thought this was one of the weedy geums, but my boss says the foliage isn't right - and after googling geum, I'd have to agree with her.
She thinks it's an Anemone, and I don't think so. Plant is about 24" tall. It's growing all over, mostly in shady locations in the Philadelphia area. |
Follow-Up Postings:

| The green flowers suggest Sanicula gregaria but it could be another species in that genus. |
|
| Thanks, lycopus. That looks right. Today I came across another plant that looks very similar, but appears to get much taller and to only have one or two stems per plant, unlike the dense one pictured. I'm betting it's another Sanicula. |
|
| Carrieb, I checked BONAP and found that there are five species of Sanicula expected in the Philadelphia area. Those are marilandica, canadensis, trifoliata, smallii, and odorata (formerly gregaria). I like some of the weedy species, because they have charcter and can be beautiful in macro mode. |

| Thanks, jekeesl. I hadn't been familiar w/ BONAP - just went to their page - good to know about! I'd never heard of Sanicula before either, but we've been battling it in various gardens for years. I mostly don't mind weeds if they're not ecological invasives & not super garden aggressive. Plus, for me, they're job security. |

| There are other plants in the parsely family that could be mistaken for Sanicula if the flowers aren't present, for example Cryptotaenia canadensis. |
