Wild Apples in Georgia

I can not decide if this post belongs in Name That Plant or or fruit tree section. I am curious about the common "wild apples" that are found so often here in Ga. My GGM used to call them "Alexander apples". Is this the correct name? These apples are medium in size, green with a red blush and SO yummy. I started some from seed many years ago from my GGM's tree. The trees seem to always come true to type. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :-)

Thanks for the link. The only thing that really concerns me on a probable ID would be that these apples are supposed to ripen a LOT later than the ones I have. Mine are almost full ripe and it is only July.

Anyone know of the difference in a Alexander and a American Mother apple?
