Leatherleaf mahonia is my guess. Invasive in some areas.

Thanks! It is the leatherleaf mahonia, I recognize the berries from your link, AuroraWA. There were two, about 6 mths ago, but when I checked it yesterday, there were four. I keep potted plants, but I wouldn't want to keep this! Unless it has some medicinal use. I'll look it up.

Well, at least it is something the deer will not eat

I have a mahonia in my garden. It produces beautiful yellow blooms that have a delightful citrus scent in late winter before anything else blooms--a shrub for your shady area. Honeybees give the blooms a real workout. If re-seeding is a problem in your area, the berries can be removed before maturity. Birds seem to enjoy the berries.

Invasive in the southeast and birds just help spread it.
