Trees Zone 7 VA, spotted trunk

I was working in the new-to-me yard, hacking away at the underbrush and realized that in one location I have two different trees growing.

Tree #1 has distinctive spotted or striped stalks, but I cannot get to the leaves to get a photo.

Tree # 2 had normal looking stalks, and I was able to photograph the leaves.

So what do I have here?

Tree #2 leaves:

Maybe lindera benzoin.

Second one looks like a magnolia.
