Thought it was a brassica...

I have a rescue plant, and I don't know what it is. It seems healthy, though, and has outgrown the 1-g pot I first put it into.

I'd originally thought it was a brassica of some sort, but I started to doubt that this spring when the bugs that chowed down on my broccoli and mustard greens decided to give this plant a miss. Not definitive, I know- it may still be a brassica...

When I transplanted it, I was impressed by its well-developed root system. It doesn't really look like any root vegetable I'm familiar with, but that isn't saying much. I'll post a second message with a photo of the roots that I took while trans-potting.

I'm not sure if it's an edible or an ornamental, and would really appreciate an ID from you folks.

That's an interesting possibility. At first I thought the lobes weren't distinct enough, but then I saw a few photos online that looked reasonably similar. If it is A. mollis, I wonder if the leaves will look more acanthus-like with maturity?

Thanks for the response- I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer to see what it does, but I do think A. mollis is a good suggestion...

A mollis was my first thought also. The younger the plant the less marked the toothing of the leaves.

Thanks, floralUK. Just now something else has been toothing the leaves a bit, but I'm glad to hear that I can expect a more classical-looking leaf as the plant matures.

It sounds like it will probably overwinter here, and since it is likely to be invasive in this climate, I'll keep moving it up to larger containers as it grows.
