Sage-like Plants

These plants look like a Salvia species, but don't match any of the ones I could find. S. reflexa was closest, with its short white flowers, but those plants have lots of cauline leaves.

The plants in question were mostly 6-12 inches tall. Leaves were basal, with just a few small bracts under the inflorescences. Plants had long, shaggy hairs, and flowers were mostly in whorls of 5. The flowers were white, with two petals above and three below. You can see those in the 3rd photo, which shows a flower from the bottom side.

Looks like prunella (self-heal).

No, it's definitely not Prunella vulgaris.

Penstemon?

Sure looks like some type of Salvia. I wonder if it could be the offspring of two different parents?

That's a salvia as far as I can tell. Try posting over on the Salvia forum. Some knowledgeable people go that that do not frequent here.

Thanks, all, for the consideration. I'm thinking this must be some late-season S. lyrata that is stunted because of the heat, and because it just ran out of energy. But I don't know what happened to the lyrate leaves, and our flowers are usually lilac in color. I'll post it to the Salvia forum, per remy's suggestion, and see what they think.

I did get one reply in the Salvia forum, and he thought that it was probably S. lyrata. I think he is right - it's just non-typical S. lyrata.
