Weed or Baby Crepe Myrtle?

Haven't mowed the lawn in a few weeks since it's been so hot. These things are sprouting up in one area of the yard. I've seen them in the past but always just mowed them down with the grass.

This time I dug down to have a look and they are shooting up from roots underground. Roots are about 1" in diameter and about 8" below ground. There used to be a old red or pink crepe myrtle in the area, which I had to cut down (stump was removed too) about 4 years ago to re-grade the yard.

These things are only coming up in this area of the yard.

If they are baby crepe myrtles, attached underground, is there any chance to cut them from the old roots and transplant them elsewhere? Anyone have any ideas about that?

Or, are these just some strange looking weeds I should spray/mow?

Certainly look like crepe myrtle to me, too.

They sure do look like the new growth coming from the roots of my crepe myrtles which I thought the horrible winter had killed. Personally, I'm rejoicing.

I'm sorry, but I don't know if they can be cut from the root and replanted. Maybe if you got the part of the root they're actually coming up from it would work. Worth a try if you want them, I'd say.

Let it grow for a bit and take cuttings, it's not more difficult to do.

A baby crape myrtle is a weed to me! Looks like a root sprout.

I have the same question. Exact same scenario. Last year I potted it. It was connected to a horizontal root. It's now about 18"-24" tall and somewhat bushy. It was close to an oak but there are 2 old crapes just a few feet away. I wanted to plant this but checking to see if there's a weed that looks like this first

OP here. It was a crepe myrtle for sure, I have more than I can handle now!! Been digging them and giving them away to neighbors! I moved one to a better spot in my yard and it’s doing great and big now. Good luck!
