Any idea what this ground cover is in my front yard?

Thats vinca vine! Its fairly invasive but it produces a pretty flower.

Here is a link that might be useful: ID

RE: Ground Cover

Not invasive where OP is located. And the variegated forms ('Sterling Silver', 'Ralph Shugart') as above are even less so.

Whats OP?

RE: Ground Cover

OP is original post(er), depending on the context.

I'm not sure how gardengal48 knows the location...maybe from another post.

RE: Ground Cover

I was trying to figure that out also. It's not said in this post, nor in the OP's profile. However, another post by the same person says WA somehow. It's been a while since I saw profile/zone gremlins around here. Apparently they're back!

It's not native and it creeps until it reaches some type of insurmountable barrier. Are some cultivars sterile? What about when they revert? My Mom won't stop planting this (NOID cultivar) in her garden and it keeps reverting to plain green.

Leaf shape makes me think yours is Vinca major. I've seen both greater and lesser periwinkle - particularly the latter - excluding native plants, in the manner of ivy in woods etc. of this area for years.

Jacobson, Wild Plants of Greater Seattle - Second Edition (2008):

V. major

less common wild in the Seattle area than its lesser cousin. Much is on Vashon Island. Although lesser periwinkle thrives only in shade, greater periwinkle is happy in full sun, even on Magnolia bluff

V. minor

Though it rarely sets seed, it creeps and spreads vegetatively, so is common in shady old parks and abandoned gardens, acting fully wild. Some very extensive patches occur

purpleinopp - I never set my zone or location when I set up my gardenweb account and never have gone back to set anything either. So I type in whatever I want for the optional zone info on each and every post. That is probably what the OP has done - typed in different info. No gremlins.

Oh, I bet you're right. Thanks! I bet it's always been like that and I've never noticed. I want to wonder why it's like that, but realize I don't really care.

RE: Ground Cover

Jstn254 has been posting consistently for about a week with questions on the identity of various plants in his new (to him) garden. Location was identified in previous posts as WA state and the plants being asked about are classic PNW landscape plantings.

Location and/or zone information IS important, as it can help to reduce the possibilities when identifying plants to what commonly grows in that part of the world or to be more specific about plant care or pest and disease issues, which also tend to be more specific to location. Not to mention invasiveness, which is completely location-related, hence my comment about the vinca.

FWIW, I set up my zone/location info when I signed onto GW eons ago and have never touched it since. It hasn't ever changed that I am aware of :-)

Agree about Zone/Geographic location being important. I don't believe I initially included that information on my page - so it didn't show up when I posted. I've since gone back & set it up so it shows up automatically.
