I recently found this very large bush like plant growing in one of my flower beds. Even though it is large like a bush/shrub, the stems are purple and they are not wood, almost like a succulant. It has large flowers that turn into spikey type seed pods. Can anyone ID this plant?

That is Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium). Get it cut down and destroyed before the seeds are dispersed, or you will be sorry for next year. And certainly don't smoke or eat any part of it. Also the last picture shows yellow nutsedge in the upper right corner. That is a horrible weed to get started in your landscape. Get after that one in a big way too.

Many people grow this plant on purpose. It's not necessary to destroy the plant to remove the seed pods.

Wow! I think someone planted this here. I'm gonna piss someone off because its getting torn down today! And the yellow nutsedge; yes, thats been a problem for a while now. I keep pulling it but it doesn't seem to completely go away. I'll keep trying with that.

You get to do what you want in your yard, I don't think it'll upset anyone. Fun, isn't it?

We were never able to control nutsedge in our yard by pulling plants. We were told that was because each plant has numerous nutlets distributed through the roots. There are options presented in this thread from GardenWeb's Weeds forum. Good luck.
