That has a Eupatorium look to it, to me, but it's too short. Is it a recent picture?

 o
RE: one more ID

I took it today.

RE: one more ID

I have JOe Pyeweed in my gardent but the leaves don't look quite the same. Are you talking about something other than that?

 o
RE: one more ID

There are more Eupatoriums than you can shake a stick at, and several are called Joe Pye Weed (just to illustrate the difficulties of common names). Your plant looks like the Joe Pye Weed I have, whatever its species, but in early May, which is why I asked if it was a recent picture.
I hope that one of the plant wizards that post in this forum weigh in on this. Sorry I couldn't help.

Branching might indicate it was damaged earlier, hence shorter now.

RE: one more ID

No I don't think it was damaged. I've been watching it grow for a while now, waiting for a flower or something that will tell me what it is.

Vernonia altissima?

 o
RE: one more ID

Those leaves remind me of Solidago.

 o
RE: one more ID

The leaves appear to be oppositely paired so that rules out some things like Vernonia and Solidago.

RE: one more ID

It reminds me of the White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima)that I have popping up in my flower beds.

Here is a link that might be useful: White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima)

RE: one more ID

I think earline might be right. The photos of White Snakeroot look closest to what I see in my garden. Thank you all.

Now I know gardening likes and dislikes are very subjective
And one person's weed is another person's treasure BUT I would like your opinions of whether this is a plant to keep or get rid of in what is supposed to be a native NA garden.
Thanks for taking time to help me out.

RE: one more ID

I don't know what to say about your plant specifically but when I see a lot of a certain plant, I get the idea that it may be a problem. Then I may pull them or at least not let them set seed. You can wait to see if you like it but maybe cut off the spent flowers this year. Then next year you can decide if it stays or leaves.

 o
RE: one more ID

Well once she gets some flowers then she should be able to determine what it is.

My joe pye that I bought has flowers already. I'll wait and see what this little one produces and come back w photos. Thanks'

RE: one more ID

If I found it here, I'd think one of the eupatoriums.

I'm also in NY State and both my joe-pye plants refused to bloom this year. They are mature plants I've had for years but the drought we've had really put a hammer to a lot of the blooming plants. Even the ones in the shade, like my black cohosh, tried to bloom only to have the flowers dry up and die before finishing the blooming cycle. Could be the dry conditions and dry location this plant is in caused atypical behavior of no blooms or perhaps it is a young plant and not yet of blooming age.

I would definitely leave the plant until you make a positive ID. It might not bloom until next season though.
