Those fruits are distinctive. But I've heard touching them with your bare fingers can hurt due to prickles. Anyone else hear/know that?

I have first hand experience. The stiff hairs that cover the husk will definitely go through skin. The nuts are very small and probably not worth the effort of trying to extract them.
