I've been working on identifying as many flowers as I can this year and this one has me stumped. Located in mountain wetland outside Boone NC, photo taken May 11, approximate height 3-4 ft, I believe the leaves are alternate. The picture was taken with a telephoto lens so the focus is a little soft and this picture is cropped dramatically. With your help I'm up to 280 flowers identified and photographed this year. Thank you very much for your help.

Thanks. What sources do you use to find these plants?

This one specifically, you could find it in any book on herb gardening. While I can't speak for Carol, I would assume her experience is similar to my own experience - a lifetime of interest in and learning about plants. The learning came from other people, education/classes, books, online sources, and more. The regulars in this forum would just know the comfrey plant you posted a picture of rather than look it up in a specific reference. FataMorgana

I've been focusing on wildflower sites on the web to identify the plants I've found this year. I guess I need to widen my searches. Thanks for the tip.
|
You can try looking at the name that plant website which is based in the Carolinas.
Here is a link that might be useful: Name that plant dot net
|
Some other sites which can be helpful are: Missouriplants.com http://www.ct-botanical-society.org/galleries/galleryindex.html Ladybird Johnson wildflower center- http://www.wildflower.org/ The last one you need to look around on the Search for Plants. You can refine the search to include characteristics for the plant, bloom time, state location, etc.

If east coast, also pick up a copy of Newcomb's Wildflower Guide. Has a great identification key in it. Once you get used to the key, you will find it invaluable. FataMorgana

Thanks for the suggestions. I have also found this site to be very helpful http://www.southeasternflora.com/searchform.asp. Be aware for some reason the search engine doesn't pull up all the plants in their data base but the site does have most of the plants I've found this year. Thanks again for all the help.
