Seeds found in western NC. The more wrinkly of the 2 (one on the right) was originally smooth, cream coloured with maroon/brown swirls running across it. It dried overnight and became wrinkly. Second one, on left, was found w/in a few miles of the first. Both were found on the ground...area is forested (mostly oaks, hickories, chinkapins, rhodies, azaleas etc)...there is water around (creeks) but these seeds were not found near the creek. I looked around for trees w/similar looking seeds but found none. One was lying under a maple but I don't think the 2 are related. Thanks for any suggestions!

Carol, Thanks for the suggestion. We thought about that except that there's a patch on the bottom of the "seed" that attached the seed to the tree (sorry I've forgotten the botanical term) and I don't *think* galls are attached in the same manner?

They are about the size of an oak gall (beginning to wonder again about oak galls...but I couldn't find any that dried and wrinkled like that....I googled images of dried oak galls)...or the size of a chestnut.

Not something we have here, but wouldn't maypop fruit get dried and wrinkled? Passionflower grows in the southeast US. FataMorgana
