The first one looks like 'Ailanthus altissima', Tree-of-Heaven. Do the leaves have a foul smell when you crush them?

 o
RE: A couple of weeds?

tree of heaven is a horribly invasive tree.. kill it immediately ...

Yikes. It's about a foot from the house, too. So that's getting pulled out.

Thanks!

The 2nd is a horsetail - another one to pull out if you can.

There is likely a large Ailanthus tree on your block, your seedlings are an ideal size to pull as the roots will still come up easily. By next year you will have to dig.

in my sand.. things do not pull out in august ... as they do in later fall ... or early spring ...

if you break it off.. and leave a significant an amount of trunk or roots.. you might want to treat it ... or it will come back ...
