Please help identify this plant

This plant resembles mayapple but differs in the following way, as described by the person who took this photo: "The mayapple fruit hangs down under the leaves; this plant's seed pods are upright. However, the leaves of this plant and the leaves of the mayapple do look similar." The person who took the photo found the plant on Mount Rogers in Virginia. I would be grateful for help in identifying this plant. Thank you.

Possibly Diphylleia cymosa, umbrella leaf.

RE: Please help identify this plant

Diphylleia translates as "two-leaved" (or something along that line). And they do have two leaves!

And "cymosa" means the flowers are arranged in a cyme.

I think the person who named this one either had no imagination or was having a very long, hard day.
