My wife and I recently moved into an apartment with a small garden plot out front. The previous tenants had neglected it terribly, and we spent some time clearing it of weeds. However, we did leave a plant in place because we're not sure what it is. I tried identifying it online, but had no luck (most likely because I'm quite the novice at gardening). Can someone please tell me what this is?

It's a peony.

Great, thank you. Can you tell which variety or color it is, since it's after the bloom?

No, you'll have to wait until next spring. You can cut the seed pods off, to save the plant the effort.

chances of knowing the exact variety is slim, there are literally thousands of hybrid cultivars! it'll be beautiful regardless
