Not a dogwood or nannyberry?

The books that I've consulted all say that this tree:

is either a flowering dogwood or a nannyberry tree, but it doesn't look like any pictures of those trees that I can find.

It's about 8 feet tall with very fragrant blossoms, and the bees and wasps seem to love it. What is it?

That would be Hydrangea paniculata

Thank you! Knowing that, I found that it's probably a floribunda cultivar.

I have 16 more trees and shrubs around my home that I want to identify so that I can properly care for them. Is there a specific book you would recommend for identifying trees and shrubs? I checked out four different books from the library, and none of them led me to hydrangea.

Wow lucky you, what a beauty! Would love to have it in my yard.

I recommend getting a good thick general garden encyclopedia-type book - Better Homes & Gardens has one, and Reader's Digest has a couple; I would get an older one, like from the '90s or earlier. Then read it - it will give you a general overview of each genus - arching branches, vase-like form, evergreen, late bloomer - and then details about the various species and cultivars, as well as care.

There are some terrific shrub & tree books around - look for Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs, and stop in at Timber Press for specialty books.

If I were in your position, I would take pictures of your unknown plants and then head to a good garden center (NOT Home Depot or Lowes) and compare your pictures to what they've got - I bet that you can narrow your choices way down, and then you can hit Gardenweb and the internet for particulars.

If you have approachable gardening neighbors, they can be of invaluable assistance in learning about your plants.

Good luck in your search!
