I found this plant at the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife refuge on May 26. Full sun, 2-3', growing near a pond. Leaves seem to be opposite except below the flower stalk where they are whorled. Any help would be appreciated.

Pieris floribunda?

Here is a link that might be useful: P. floribunda

When I looked up P. floribunda the flowers look different and I think it also has alternate leaves. I'm attaching a closeup of the flower I found. Thanks for your help.

I asked a botanist friend since it stumped us.

Thank you so much for all your help. This has been a very fun project and I have learned a great deal. I have a horticulture degree from long ago and I'm good with cultivated plants but not as good with wildflowers so I thought it would be fun to work on my photography and start learning about wildflowers. Thanks again.
