thanks for the response I considered that but I couldn't find a representative black eye susan with only 7 petals. All I found were 8 or more.

As far as I know...the number of petals isn't significant.

I have a triloba in my flowerbed with 5 petals on every flower.

Yes, petal count is quite variable for Rudbeckia. I pay more attention to the phyllaries and leaves for ID.
