Hi there Everyone,

A friend just gave me this plant, and called it a bonsai, but in my [limited] experience, I have never seen a bonsai with broad leaves like this. It doesn't look like a miniature tree at all. Does anyone know what this is?

Some kind of probably tropical tree or shrub that has been cut down low, turned into sprouting stumps. If it was being developed as a bonsai before that effect has now been lost.

I'm wondering if it is Brunfelsia pauciflora. I have a very neglected potted one which looks very similar to this.

With that green bud, I would say Ficus. Not Ficus benjamina though, maybe Ficus microcarpa. If you break a part of the plant, does it produce milky latex like a poinsettia?

Looks like it's getting sunburned or has spider mites.

Thank you all for your responses!

I would not have considered the possibility of Brunfelsia pauciflora, but here is a similar picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/xtolord/4796088392/#/photos/xtolord/47954 57587/lightbox/
Plus, it can be trained as a bonsai, apparently.

However, I definitely see ficus similarities too. Decided not to break off a piece, but I will keep your suggestions and monitor it as it grows to see....

Thanks!!
