Went for a drive today and spotted this vine growing on a tree. Does anyone know what it is ?

Unless Clematis vitalba occurs in that area. And there isn't some morphological feature visible in these pictures that precludes it.

More likely to be C. vitalba rather than C. virginiana if seedheads present now. Virginiana is a fall bloomer while vitalba is in or just past its bloom season. Not much distinctive to tell 'em apart other than than

Vitalba has naturalized widely across much of north America and is considered invasive in many areas, even though it is a valuable wildlife plant. Although virginiana is a native, it too is often considered overly aggressive both in its spread and growth habit.

Is the foliage right for C. vitalba? I thought that C. Virginiana had toothed foliage and that vitalba's foliage for not toothed.
