It Bit Me!

I have always taught my children not to touch plants without knowing they are ok, then I go and do it. 0_0
This tiny little flower was so pretty and I was rather distracted at the time. I reached down and was going to pick it or at least get a better look when the vicious little thing bit me!
Now Im not saying it had needles like a cactus, no that would not be accurate at all. I would have welcomed a cactus sting at the time. This was much much worse.
It looked white and soft but it felt like there were teeth on that stem and it bit me! The sting on my finger didn't really last long but it immediately could be felt throughout my body, almost like an electrical shock!
I immediately thought, yep.. stinging nettle.. but it was too late. I felt hot all over in a matter of minutes and my lip started to tingle. By the time I got back to the car I thought for sure I would have had a 2 pound bottom lip but it was actually just a little redder than usual.
The only good thing about this experience was that my sinuses and my blurry eyes cleared up rather quickly. Not sure if this was the reaction to the plant or the shear fear that raced through my body when it happened.
I swear.. I thought I had been bitten by a snake.
So.. my question is.. Is this indeed Stinging Nettle and is this type of reaction common?

Thank you much! :) I was interesting in making nettle tea but just read that bull nettle should not be used for tea. Only the seed/nuts from it can be eaten. I think I'll pass. >:(

Stinging nettle does produce flowers but they are a drab green, the same colour as the foliage and don't look like conventional flowers. More like dusty bobbly tassels. And nettles don't have immediately visible prickles but tiny hairs. And if they're flowering they are too tough for eating. You need fresh young growth.
